The birthday celebration started one day early for Kearney native Ryan Zech, who on Thursday took home the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior Championship. Zech, who turns 16 today, shot a final-round 70 to finish with an 8-under 208 for the tournament, held at the Oakwood Country Club.

Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 in the final round today to win the 56th Virginia State Golf Association Boys Junior Amateur Championship in Blacksburg. Paolini, 17, finished the tournament at 12-under 204 — the lowest 54-hole total since the event went to all stroke play in 1964 — to record his second straight championship in the junior event.
